In US onshore alone, it’s estimated that oilfield and specialty chemicals have exceeded $3 Billion as an annual line-item spend for oil and gas companies. An industry that used to be made up of three or four top-tier chemical companies and a handful of regional suppliers in the early 2000’s has exploded into an industry that now includes closer to a dozen top-tier chemical companies, as well as dozens, if not hundreds of regional chemical suppliers across the country. The Permian Basin accounts for almost half of the US onshore chemical demand, estimated to be a $1.5 Billion annual industry. Increased oil and gas production demands, unconventional and new production and drilling technologies, along with new regulations tied to ESG initiatives have created a dream scenario for chemical companies and suppliers.
In response to this industry shift, oil and gas companies including all Super Major E&Ps are rapidly defaulting to hiring their own in-house chemical advisors to help control chemical cost, manage performance, accountability, and sustainability. The number of employees who have left the chemical industry to become in-house chemical advisors for oil and gas companies has grown exponentially as a result.
